What is Biltricide?

 Biltricide is a prescription drug that treats schistosoma (an infection with a type of worm that lives in the bloodstream). These worms are found in Africa, South America, Middle Eastern countries, parts of Asia, and the Caribbean. They enter the body through skin that has come into contact with contaminated water. 

Biltricide can also treat liver fluke, an infection with a type of worm that lives in the liver or near the liver. This type of worm is found in East Asia, and enters the body through consumption of contaminated fish.

The active ingredient in Biltricide, praziquantel, kills the worms by causing them to contract and paralyzing them, then the body gets rid of the worms. Biltricide is a tablet that is usually taken three times a day, four to six hours apart, for one day. Take Biltricide with a meal and full glass of water. Your doctor will instruct you on the dosage. You may need to break the tablet to get the correct dosage, but the tablet should not be chewed. If the patient cannot swallow the tablet or the tablet portion whole, the tablet may be crushed, mixed with a liquid or semisolid food such as applesauce, and swallowed immediately, without chewing.

Before taking Biltricide, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and history, as well as all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. You should not take Biltricide if you are allergic to praziquantel, or if you have taken rifampin in the past 4 weeks. Avoid grapefruit products while taking Biltricide.

What are the side effects of Biltricide?

The most common side effects of Biltricide include, but are not limited to, nausea, stomach pain, headache, fever, dizziness, skin hives, sleepiness, appetite loss, and feeling bad (malaise).

Call your doctor right away if you have:

• Fever, chills, sore throat, headache, body aches, tiredness

• Slow or irregular heartbeat

• Stomach problems: cramping or bloating, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea

• A seizure

• Difficulty concentrating

• Cold sweats, irritation of the skin

Allergic reactions to Biltricide are rare. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help right away.
