Ivermectin is a prescription medication that is commonly used to treat certain parasitic roundworm infections. This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as anthelmintics. Drugs in this class expel parasitic worms and other internal parasites from the body by either stunning or killing them and without causing significant damage to the host. They may also be called vermifuges or vermicides.
Before you start using Ivermectin, inform your healthcare provider if you have liver or kidney disease, cancer, HIV or AIDS, or other conditions that can weaken your immune system. The effects of Ivermectin on an unborn baby have not yet been determined, so tell your health care provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This medication can be passed through breast milk so you should not breastfeed while taking Ivermectin.
In order for Ivermectin to be completely effective, you may need to take additional doses several months to a year after your initial dose. If you have a weak immune system, you may need to take multiple doses of Ivermectin. In people with weakened immune systems, curing roundworm infections can reduce the risk of developing a severe or life-threatening infection.
