This FDA-approved medication is an antibiotic that is used to treat a certain parasitic infection known as Chagas disease. This condition is also called American trypanosomiasis and is caused by a parasite common to the areas of South America, Central America, and Mexico. Benznidazole works by stopping the growth of the parasite. This antibiotic only treats Chagas disease. It will not work for viral infections such as the common cold, or the flu.

Benznidazole is available as an oral tablet that is usually taken twice a day, about 12 hours apart.
