Venofer (iron sucrose) is an injectable prescription iron supplement that helps the body produce red blood cells, which are critical for transporting needed oxygen to the body's cells. Venofer is prescribed to treat iron-deficiency anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Venofer is injected as a slow IV injection or infusion by a healthcare professional during a dialysis session. Venofer can be administered as an IV injection over 2 to 5 minutes or an IV infusion over 15 minutes. For children with chronic kidney disease, Venofer is also administered by a healthcare professional as a slow IV injection or infusion. Because of the possibility of an allergic reaction, the patient should be monitored for 30 minutes after administration of the medicine.

What are the side effects of Venofer?

Venofer may also cause other side effects including slow heart rate and low blood pressure. Allergic reactions to Venofer are rare but can be very serious. A Venofer injection may cause an allergic reaction that could result in anaphylactic shock, low blood pressure, unconsciousness, and even death, so it is important for a patient to be observed for 30 minutes or more after the IV injection or infusion. Other signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Mood and mental changes have not been reported for Venofer.
