What is Ferrlecit?

This FDA-approved medication is a member of the iron products drug class and is commonly used to treat patients with iron deficiency anemia associated with chronic renal disease, who are on hemodialysis and also receiving supplemental epoetin therapy. This medication is a type of iron. The iron that you normally get from your regular diet becomes a part of hemoglobin in the body. Hemoglobin helps to carry oxygen through your blood to tissues and organs. Patients with chronic renal disease make less red blood cells which cause anemia. This medication helps to increase the amount of iron in the body which, in turn, helps to create more red blood cells.

This medication is available in the form of an intravenous solution. It is given as an infusion into a vein during your dialysis session. Ferrlecit must be given slowly and the infusion can take at least one hour to complete. Your doctor will need to do frequent tests to monitor your health condition after treatment. 

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to sodium ferric gluconate complex or benzyl alcohol. 

Ferrlecit is not approved for use by anyone younger than six years old. Ferrlecit can cause serious side effects or death in very young or premature babies.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had iron overload syndrome or if you receive regular blood transfusions. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have and all of the medications you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

What are the side effects of Ferrlecit?

Treatment with Ferrlecit may result in common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, injection site reaction, headaches, dizziness, fast heartbeat, chest pain, trouble breathing, weakness, tiredness, and leg cramps. Changes in blood pressure may occur. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting down or lying down position. Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare.
