What is Xerese?

Xerese is a brand-name topical medication used to treat cold sores, which are caused by the herpes simplex virus. It is available as a topical cream that contains a combination of acyclovir and hydrocortisone. This combination of drugs works together to stop the growth of the virus and relieve symptoms of itching, pain, and burning. Xerese helps to speed up the healing of cold sores but does not cure herpes or prevent passing the infection to someone else.

Xerese is meant for external use on the skin only. Use this medication at the first sign of a cold sore. Clean and dry the affected area before applying this medication. Apply a thin layer of this medication to the affected area, usually five times a day for up to five days. Apply enough of this cream to cover the entire affected area.

Do not apply other skin products such as make-up or sunscreen to the area where you have used this drug. You should also avoid showering for up to 30 minutes after using this medication. This will help to prevent the medication from getting washed off. Avoid getting this cream into your eyes, nose, mouth, or ears. If it does get into any of these areas, flush with plenty of water. Use this medication as prescribed by a doctor.

What are the side effects of Xerese?

Common side effects of Xerese include reactions around the site of application which may include drying or flaking of the skin, burning, redness, stinging, changes in skin color, and itching. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.

Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as itching, rash, swelling of the face or throat, and severe dizziness,

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
