Valium is a prescription medication used to treat anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, and seizures. It is also used to relieve muscle spasms and to provide sedation before certain medical procedures. Valium belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines and works by calming the nerves and brain. Valium is available as a tablet and an injection. This medication is a controlled substance—it can be habit-forming and can cause addiction, overdose, or even death.
Do not use Valium if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Avoid drinking alcohol while using Valium.
Before you start using Valium, provide your doctor with a full medical history. If you have or had medical conditions like sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, kidney or liver disease, alcohol or drug addiction, glaucoma, breathing problems, mental illness, or epilepsy, tell your doctor.
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Valium, tell your doctor, as this medication may harm an unborn baby. Your baby could become dependent on the drug and experience life-threatening withdrawal symptoms after birth. You should not breastfeed while on Valium because it can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Valium should not be used by patients younger than six months old.
Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements. Providing your doctor with a full list of medications will reduce your likelihood of drug interactions and adverse effects. Certain drugs should not be taken with Valium, especially opioids such as oxycodone or Percocet.
Only use Valium as prescribed by your doctor. Do not alter your Valium dosage. Selling or sharing this medication is against the law. Do not take this medicine for longer than four months without medical advice from your doctor. Do not stop using Valium suddenly, as doing so may cause life-threatening withdrawal reactions. Speak to your doctor about how and when to stop taking Valium. Your doctor will provide you with a gradual tapering schedule. Call your doctor if this medicine is not working as well as usual, or if you think you need to use more than usual. Valium may cause suicidal thoughts and behavior in very rare cases, so behavior and mood changes should be closely monitored.
Keep Valium out of reach of children and pets.
Common side effects of Valium include drowsiness, tired feeling, muscle weakness, and other problems with muscle control or coordination.
If you have more serious side effects like agitation, blurred vision, blistering, flaking, or peeling of the skin, black, tarry stools, decrease in the frequency and/or volume of urination, dark urine, dizziness, seizures, hallucinations, loss of interest or pleasure, loss of appetite, trouble concentrating, or fast heartbeat, contact your doctor immediately or get emergency medical attention if needed.
Get medical help right away if you have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This is not a complete list of the possible side effects of Valium. Ask your doctor or healthcare provider for additional information on the risks and benefits of taking this medication. You may report your adverse reactions to the FDA.
