Is there a generic of Tenivac?

Tenivac is a brand-name diphtheria-tetanus adsorbed vaccine manufactured by Sanofi. Generic diphtheria-tetanus adsorbed vaccines are manufactured by Sanofi, Merck, and Akorn. However, clinics and hospitals choose the brand of diphtheria-tetanus adsorbed vaccine and purchase that product from specialty pharmacies.

What is Tenivac?

Tenivac is a brand-name vaccine that provides active immunity from diphtheria and tetanus bacterial infections. Both are serious infections that can be fatal.

The immunizing ingredients in Tenivac are diphtheria and tetanus toxoids that have been detoxified. These toxoids are “glued” (adsorbed) onto aluminum phosphate so that they last longer, so you may find Tenivac or its generic version referred to as “diphtheria and tetanus toxoids adsorbed.”

When injected into the body, these toxoids stimulate an immune response in the body without causing an infection. The immune system then produces antibodies against the bacteria that will provide a years-long line of defense against future infections.

Tenivac is injected as 3 primary doses and 2 booster doses. After these first two sets of immunizations, Tenivac is re-administered as a booster every ten years. Even for people who are up-to-date on vaccinations, Tenivac may be administered during wound treatment to protect against tetanus infection. Tenivac is usually injected into the shoulder (deltoid) muscle.

What are the side effects of Tenivac?

Most patients will experience one or more side effects after a Tenivac injection, usually a site reaction such as pain (4 in 5 patients), redness (1 in 4), swelling (1 in 7), and a hard lump at the injection site. These site reactions are temporary and will fade in a day or two. Other common side effects include but are not limited to muscle weakness (1 in 3 patients), headache (1 in 4 patients), “feeling bad” (1 in 7 patients), joint pain, and fever. Allergic reactions are very rare and include rash, itching, and swelling at the injection site.
