What is Solosec?

Solosec is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. It’s FDA-approved to treat patients aged 12 years and older. Solosec is the first of its kind, offering a complete course of treatment in a single oral dose. Solosec works by interfering with the functions and growth of the bacteria or parasites causing the infection. It is classified as a nitroimidazole antimicrobial drug that blocks the ability of bacteria and parasites to grow and multiply.

What doses of Solosec are available?

Solosec is available as a single 2-gram dose. It is taken as oral granules that are sprinkled onto applesauce, yogurt, or pudding. The entire dose mixture should be taken within 30 minutes without chewing the granules. Solosec is not meant to be dissolved in a liquid. The one-time dosage of Solosec is one of the unique features that may make it convenient and easy to use.

What are the side effects of Solosec?

Solosec may cause side effects, some of which may be serious. Common side effects of Solosec may include:

  • Nausea

  • Headache

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Vulvovaginal itching

  • Metallic taste in the mouth

Serious side effects are rare but may include a severe allergic reaction. If you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or rashes after taking Solosec, seek immediate medical attention. Solosec may also cause vaginal yeast infections. How long does it take for Solosec to work?

Solosec reaches maximum levels in the blood within four hours. It continues to work for around four days after administration. You may start to notice an improvement in symptoms within a few days after taking the single dose. However, studies show that it could take up to three or four weeks to completely clear up bacterial vaginosis.

What is the success rate of Solosec?

Clinical trials have shown that Solosec is effective for treating bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. Studies have found that around 50% of women with bacterial vaginosis will respond to Solosec and around 90% of people with trichomoniasis will be cured by Solosec. Success rates can vary between individuals. Always consult your doctor if your symptoms persist or worsen after taking the medication.

Is Solosec the same as metronidazole?

No, Solosec and metronidazole are not the same. Both are similarly effective for treating bacterial vaginosis but contain different active ingredients. Solosec is a brand-name drug that contains secnidazole, while metronidazole is a generic drug that contains a different antibiotic. They have different dosing regimens and potential side effects. Consult with your healthcare provider for medical advice to determine the best treatment for your condition.
