What is Risperdal?

Risperdal is a brand-name prescription medication used to treat certain mental and mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or irritability associated with autistic disorder. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics, and it works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances, dopamine and serotonin, in the brain. 

This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet that can be taken with or without food. Read and follow the instruction leaflet provided with this medication before you begin using it. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. To help reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may start you on a low dose of this medication and then gradually increase it over time.
