Quinine Sulfate is a generic prescription medication used alone or with other medications to treat malaria caused by mosquito bites. Malaria parasites typically enter the body through mosquito bites and then live in tissues such as the red blood cells or the liver. Quinine Sulfate works by killing the malaria parasites that live inside red blood cells.
Read and follow the instructions provided in the medication guidelines when using this drug. Quinine Sulfate comes in the form of an oral tablet and is usually taken with food to decrease an upset stomach. Quinine Sulfate is typically taken every eight hours for three to seven days. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
Use this medication at least two to three hours before or after taking antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium. These products bind with Quinine Sulfate and prevent the body from fully absorbing the drug. Continue using this medication until the full prescribed amount is completed, even if your symptoms disappear early. If you stop taking this medication too early it may cause the infection to return.
Quinine Sulfate may cause unwanted side effects such as mild headaches, flushing, nausea, unusual sweating, decreased hearing, blurred vision, dizziness, and temporary changes in color vision. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.
This medication may cause low blood sugar, especially during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor if you experience symptoms of low blood sugar while taking this drug, such as sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling in the hands or feet. If you experience low blood sugar you can increase your blood sugar level by eating a quick source of sugar such as candy or soda.
Ask your doctor or healthcare provider for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Quinine Sulfate as this is not a complete list of side effects.
