Chloroquine Phosphate is used to prevent or treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. Chloroquine Phosphate is used to kill the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells. You sometimes may need to take a different medication (such as primaquine) to kill the malaria parasites living in other body tissues. Both drugs may be needed for a complete cure and to prevent recurrence of the infection.
Chloroquine Phosphate belongs to a class of drugs known as antimalarials. During the blood stages of the life cycle of the malaria parasite, the parasite needs to degrade hemoglobin. Hemoglobin digestion releases free heme that is toxic to the parasite, so it is then polymerized to non-toxic hemozoin. Antimalarial quinolines are thought to interfere with this polymerization and kill the malaria parasite by the accumulation of toxic free heme.
Chloroquine Phosphate is also used to treat amebiasis. Gastrointestinal amebiasis is an infection of the large intestine caused by microscopic one-celled parasites commonly known as amoebas. Chloroquine Phosphate works by killing the parasite.
Diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, headache, changes in hair or skin color, temporary hair loss, or mild muscle weakness are some side effects that patients using Chloroquine Phosphate may experience.
These are not all of the side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, talk to your healthcare provider more further medical advice. You may report negative side effects to the FDA.
