Questran, along with changes in diet, is a prescription oral medication used to reduce cholesterol levels in patients who have not succeeded in reducing cholesterol by modifying their diet. Questran belongs to a class of drugs called bile acid seQuestrans, that work by helping the body eliminate bile acid and preventing the intestines from reabsorbing bile acid. This prompts the liver to convert cholesterol to bile acids, and helps lower cholesterol levels. Questran is a powder and is always mixed with water or another liquid before taking. Before taking Questran, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Questran is not appropriate for everyone. For example, people with a blockage in the stomach or intestines should not take Questran. Also, tell your doctor about all of the medicines you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Other medications should be taken at least 1 hour before or at least 4 to 6 hours after taking Questran. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you need help with a medication schedule.
Questran can affect your teeth. Brush and floss your teeth regularly while taking Questran.
Drink extra fluids while taking Questran. This helps prevent constipation. Follow your doctor’s instructions for diet and exercise while taking Questran.
The most common side effects of Questran include, but are not limited to, constipation, stomach pain, gas, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, burping, appetite loss, bleeding, oily stools, and fatigue.
Allergic reactions to Questran are rare. They include hives, swelling, and trouble breathing, and require emergency medical attention.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
