Plavix works to prevent blood platelets from sticking together and forming an unwanted blood clot that can block an artery. Platelets are blood cells that normally help your blood to clot. Plavix belongs to a class of drugs called platelet aggregation inhibitors.

Before using Plavix you should let your healthcare provider know about any other medical conditions you may have. You should also provide a list of medications you are using including over-the-counter treatments, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

If you are going to have surgery or dental work done you should tell your physician that ahead of time that you are using Plavix. This medication is an anticoagulant, which means it can make it easier for you to bruise or bleed even from a minor injury.

You should not use Plavix if you are allergic to its active ingredients, if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or if you have certain genetic factors that affect the breakdown of this medication.
