What is Asmanex Hfa?

Asmanex Hfa is an FDA-approved prescription aerosol medication used as a maintenance medication to control and prevent symptoms of asthma such as shortness of breath and wheezing. Asmanex Hfa does not treat acute asthma exacerbations. It belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids, and works by reducing swelling and inflammation in your airways.

Asmanex Hfa must be used on a regular basis in order to work effectively. It does not work immediately and should not be taken to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If you do experience an asthma attack, you should use your quick-relief (rescue) inhaler instead.

Allergic reactions to Asmanex Hfa are rare. Seek emergency medical attention right away if you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue.

This medication comes in the form of an inhalation aerosol. It is inhaled into the mouth with a dosage that is recommended by your doctor. Usually, two inhalations twice daily are recommended. Ensure that you clean your inhaler mouthpiece with a dry wipe (do not wash in water) every 7 days or as directed. After using your inhaler, rinse and spit (do not swallow) with water, to help prevent a fungal infection in the mouth called oral thrush. You may not experience the full benefit of this medication until one to two weeks of use. Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen after two weeks of using Asmanex Hfa.

What are the side effects of Asmanex Hfa?

While using Asmanex Hfa you may experience dry throat, hoarseness, headache, symptoms of a cold, or coughing. These side effects generally occur when you first start taking this medication and usually go away after your body adjusts to treatment. If you experience any of these side effects, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist right away.

Seek immediate medical help if you notice signs of any serious side effects or adverse reactions such as white patches on your tongue or in your mouth, signs of an infection, vision problems, easy bleeding, bone pain, or mood changes such as depression.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Other effects not listed here may also occur while you are using this medication. Contact your healthcare provider for medical advice, additional information, and any further questions about Asmanex Hfa before you begin treatment.
