Cilostazol is a generic prescription drug that treats intermittent claudication, or pain in the leg muscles caused by decreased blood flow and oxygenation. This condition may be associated with hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. Because of the reduced blood flow to the legs, patients with intermittent claudication experience pain after walking short distances. Cilostazol relaxes and widens the arteries, allowing more blood flow to the legs so patients can walk longer and farther without pain.
Cilostazol is a phosphodiesterase III inhibitor (PDE III inhibitor) with antiplatelet and vasodilating properties. Cilostazol works by blocking the breakdown of a certain protein involved with smooth muscle relaxation in the blood vessels and the formation of blood clots. Cilostazol prevents blood clotting to improve blood flow. Cilostazol is taken as a tablet twice daily and usually shows effects within 2 to 4 weeks, although long-term treatment may be recommended.
Cilostazol is available as a 50 mg or 100 mg oral tablet. This medication may be recommended to be taken 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal. This medication should only be used as directed by a doctor or healthcare provider.
Common side effects of Cilostazol include headache, diarrhea, palpitations, and abnormal stools. Other side effects may include dizziness, sore throat, runny nose, indigestion, and abdominal pain.
Serious side effects of Cilostazol include heart problems, such as an irregular heartbeat, fast heart rate, and low blood pressure. Cilostazol may increase the risk of bleeding in some people. This medication may also cause changes in blood cell counts, such as thrombocytopenia and leukopenia, which may need to be monitored during treatment.
Allergic reactions are possible with Cilostazol. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience hives, itching, dizziness, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or mouth.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your physician or healthcare provider about other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions involved with taking Cilostazol.
