Phenytoin belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Epileptic seizures are caused by the repetitive, overexcited, and abnormal firing of nerve cells in the brain, which may be triggered by a situation or other stimulus. Phenytoin works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Phenytoin is taken as a capsule, chewable tablet, oral suspension, or injection. Before taking Phenytoin, tell your healthcare provider about your medical history and any medical conditions you have. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Allergic reactions are extremely rare but include hives, rashes, itching, and trouble breathing. These symptoms require emergency medical attention. Severe skinreactions are possible, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a drug reaction that causes dark rashes, blistering, and peeling throughout the skin as well as fever, sore throat, and flu-like symptoms. A rare complication of injected Phenytoin is Purple Glove Syndrome, which involves severe swelling, pain, and discoloration of the hands and feet and may require amputation.
