Is there a generic of Klonopin?

Klonopin is a brand-name prescription medication manufactured by Genentech. The generic version of Klonopin is clonazepam.

What is Klonopin?

Klonopin is a generic prescription medication that is FDA-approved. It is a tranquilizer/anticonvulsant that belongs to the benzodiazepine drug class and used to treat panic disorder or seizures. It works in the brain to prevent or stop seizures.

Benzodiazepines are  central nervous system (CNS) depressants that help to slow down the nervous system. Klonopin is only available with a doctor's prescription and should only be used as prescribed. Klonopin is a controlled substance. This medication may be habit-forming, you should take special precautions when using Klonopin to ensure you are being safe. Klonopin may be used alone or together with other medications, which your doctor will determine. Klonopin can be used by both adults and children for seizure disorders, and by adults only for panic attacks. Klonopin is available in tablet form and also a disintegrating tablet form.

Klonopin has a black box warning, which is the strongest warning required by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). The warning applies to all benzodiazepines and states:

  • Do not take opioid medications (such as oxycodone, Percocet, Vicodin) with benzodiazepines. The combination of an opioid and benzodiazepine can lead to severe sedation, severe respiratory depression (where breathing slows or stops), coma, and death. If the combination cannot be avoided, the lowest doses of each medication should be used, for the shortest period of time, and the patient should be closely monitored.

  • Benzodiazepines have a risk of abuse, misuse, and addiction, which can cause overdose or death. Abuse of benzodiazepines often involves other medications (legal or illegal) or alcohol.

Benzodiazepine use may lead to physical dependence, which is more likely to occur with a longer treatment period and higher dose. Never abruptly stop taking a benzodiazepine, because this can lead to severe or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. If you need to stop taking a benzodiazepine, your doctor can instruct you on a tapering schedule to gradually stop taking it. If you are or plan on becoming pregnant, you should ask your doctor for additional information on Klonopin about the risks involved, because Klonopin can cause complications to the baby. If you are breastfeeding, you should inform your doctor as Klonopin may seep into breast milk.

You should let your doctor know your medical history and if you have any underlying medical conditions such as depression, anxiety, lung or breathing problems, glaucoma, liver or kidney disease, before starting treatment using Klonopin.

Klonopin can have various drug interactions. Tell your doctor about all of the medicine you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, and vitamins or supplements, so your doctor can ensure that Klonopin is safe to take with your other medications.

Do not consume alcohol while being treated with Klonopin. Klonopin should be stored at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight, and kept out of the reach of children.

What are the side effects of Klonopin?

The most common side effects of Klonopin include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, muscle weakness, and problems with walking, coordination, or memory. Severe allergic reactions are rare. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat, get emergency medical treatment right away. This is not the full list of side effects, and others serious side effects may occur. You can report unlisted side effects to the FDA. Seek medical advice from your doctor to ensure that Klonopin is right for you to use. If you have underlying medical conditions, speak to your doctor or healthcare practitioners about the risks involved before starting treatment using Klonopin.
