Is there a generic of Onfi?

Clobazam is the generic version of Onfi that has been approved by the FDA.

What is Onfi?

Onfi is used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in people two years of age or older. It is usually added to a treatment plan that includes other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Onfi belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines or benzodiazepine anticonvulsants. The active ingredient is clobazam and this medicine works by enhancing the effects of GABA in your body.

You should read your medication guide before taking this drug. You may crush your Onfi tablet and mix the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce to make it easier for you to swallow. Swallow the mixture right away without chewing.

Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or do other dangerous activities until you know how this prescription medication affects you. Onfi can make you sleepy or dizzy, and it may cause problems with your coordination, especially when you are walking or picking things up. Onfi is a controlled substance and can lead to addiction, overdose, or death if it is not taken correctly. Onfi can also cause your breathing to slow or stop, especially if you have recently used an opioid painkiller, alcohol, or other medicines that slow your breathing. Do not increase your dose of Onfi without consulting your doctor. Never take it more often than prescribed without talking to your doctor. Do not stop taking Onfi suddenly. Stopping Onfi suddenly can cause seizures and withdrawal symptoms. Keep Onfi securely out of the reach of children and pets. Before taking Onfi, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and history, as well as all of the medications you take, including Rx, OTC, supplements, or vitamins. Clobazam can interact with certain drugs. One example is hormonal birth control, such as birth control pills. Onfi can make birth control pills less effective. If you take Onfi and birth control pills, talk to your doctor about the second form of birth control such as condoms.

What are the side effects of Onfi?

Onfi can cause serious skin reactions. Call your healthcare provider immediately if you have skin blisters, rash, or sores in the mouth. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue, get emergency medical attention right away. Onfi has also been known to cause suicidal thoughts in a small number of people taking it. It should be noted that this is not a full list of all possible side effects associated with Onfi use. Talk to your doctor about what side effects to expect and how to address them.

Seek medical help right away if you have any symptoms of depression, especially sudden changes in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings, and especially if they are new or worse. You can also make a report to the FDA by calling 1-800-FDA-1088.

Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
