What is Xolair?

Xolair is a prescription medicine used to treat moderate to severe persistent asthma in patients 6 years of age or older whose asthma symptoms are not controlled by other drugs such as inhaled corticosteroids. A skin or blood test is performed to see if you have allergies to year-round allergens. Xolair also treats chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) in patients 12 years of age and older who continue to have hives that are not controlled by H1 antihistamine treatment. CIU is a condition where patients experience chronic hives on their skin that result in itchy, red bumps, or wheals.

Xolair belongs to the monoclonal antibodies drug class and works by binding to the IgE allergic antibody in the bloodstream and hence neutralizing or blocking its actions.

It should be noted that Xolair is not used to treat other allergic conditions, other forms of urticaria, acute bronchospasm, or status asthmaticus. This drug is also not a rescue medicine and should not be used as such.
