Jencycla is a generic women's birth control pill with norethindrone, a naturally occurring female hormone (progestin), as the active ingredient. Taken daily, Jencycla helps prevent ovulation (the release of an egg by the ovaries), fertilization, and implantation of an egg.
Jencycla is a mini-pill, that is, it contains only a progestin (norethindrone), but no estrogen, as most birth control pills do. Mini-pills are less effective than two-hormone pills—40% of women continue to ovulate on the mini-pill and 3% get pregnant. It is important to use other forms of birth control while on Jencycla. Even though they are less effective than regular birth control pills, mini-pills are prescribed to nursing women because estrogen decreases milk production, as well as to women who smoke or have high blood pressure.
Jencycla is taken daily in a 28-day sequence. It is a “monophasic” oral contraceptive, that is, the dose of each active ingredient remains the same throughout the 28-day sequence. The final seven “reminder” tablets, however, are placebos to promote menstruation at the end of the monthly cycle, when pregnancy is no longer a risk.
Common side effects of Jencycla include but are not limited to swelling, bloating, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, headache, breast tenderness, menstrual changes, and vaginal itching and discharge. Mood changes are common and include depression and trouble sleeping. Allergic reactions to Jencycla are extremely rare but include rashes and hives.
