Slynd is a progestin contraceptive (birth control) that contains the ingredient drospirenone. It works by suppressing ovulation and is used by women of reproductive age to prevent pregnancy.
Slynd is taken once daily at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole and do not chew or crush it.
You will take a white pill (active pill) daily for 24 days, followed by a green (inactive) pill daily for the next 4 days. Then, you will start a new pack, repeating the cycle. You should start the first pill on the first day of your period. If you are switching to Slynd from another birth control, ask your healthcare provider when to start. Every time you begin a new pack of Slynd, start with the first tablet in the first row. You can use the enclosed stickers to mark your weekday schedule on the pack.
Slynd is not an emergency birth control and does not prevent sexually transmitted infections such as HIV or AIDS.
If you miss one white pill, take it as soon as possible. Then, continue to take one tablet daily until the pack is finished.
If you miss two or more white pills, take the last missed tablet as soon as you remember. Then, continue to take one tablet daily until the pack is finished. One or more missed tablet(s) will remain in the pack. Use a backup form of birth control like condoms if you have sex within 7 days of missing tablets.
If you miss one or more green tablets, skip the missed days and continue to take one tablet daily until you finish the pack.
Common side effects of Slynd include acne, headache, breast pain, and irregular menstrual cycles. You may have irregular bleeding, especially during the first few months. Tell your healthcare provider if it is heavy or continues.
Serious side effects may occur. These may include high potassium levels, depression, and risk of blood clots.
Allergic reactions are rare. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, get emergency medical help. Symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Slynd is not safe for everyone. Before taking Slynd, tell your doctor about your medical conditions and history. If you are allergic to drospirenone, you should not take Slynd. Others who should not take Slynd include those who are pregnant or have:
Progestin-dependent cancer or a history of progestin-dependent cancer
Cervical cancer
Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
Liver tumor or liver disease
Kidney problems
Adrenal insufficiency
Slynd should be used with caution in people who are at risk for high potassium as well as those with clotting disorders, diabetes, or a history of depression.
Before taking Slynd, tell your physician about all your medications, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Some examples of drug interactions include:
Drugs that can make Slynd less effective include efavirenz, phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, bosentan, felbamate, griseofulvin, oxcarbazepine, rifampin, rufinamide, aprepitant, and St. John's wort
Drugs that increase the risk of high potassium when taken with Slynd include ACE inhibitors such as lisinopril, ARBs such as losartan, potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, spironolactone, and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen
This is not a full list of drug interactions, and others may occur. Consult your doctor for a full list of drug interactions.
Weight gain is considered a common side effect of Slynd, occurring in about 2% of individuals who take the medicine.
While taking Slynd, you may experience changes in menstrual bleeding. This could include irregular bleeding or spotting, especially between periods, or the absence of periods. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any changes in menstrual bleeding. Continue to take your pills every day to prevent pregnancy. It can be normal to miss periods while on birth control. However, if you go two or more months in a row without a period—or if you miss your period after a cycle where you missed pills, call your doctor because you could be pregnant. Also, call your doctor if you have pregnancy symptoms such as vomiting or breast tenderness. Stop taking Slynd if you are pregnant.
