Granix is an injectable prescription bone marrow stimulant. Specifically, it is classified as a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. Its active ingredient is a man-made protein (filgrastim) that helps the bone marrow make white blood cells (neutrophils). It is taken by patients who are at risk of infections because of cancer treatments, which can weaken the body's ability to produce white blood cells.
Granix is usually administered by a healthcare provider as a subcutaneous injection, or an injection delivered under the skin. In some cases, patients may self-inject the drug at home with permission and guidance from their doctor. Injections begin 24 hours after chemotherapy and are typically continued until white blood cell counts return to normal.
The most common side effect of Granix is bone pain. Other side effects may include shortness of breath and enlargement of the spleen, indicated by abdominal pain. Allergic reactions to Granix are rare and may present with signs or symptoms such as trouble breathing, wheezing, or rash. Mood and mental changes have not been reported for Granix. Consult a healthcare provider for other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Granix.
