Fragmin is a brand-name prescription drug. There are no generic alternatives at this time.
Fragmin is a prescription injection that prevents blood clotting in patients who have had a heart attack, abdominal surgery, hip or knee replacement surgery, or patients at risk of blood clots because an acute illness severely restricts their movement. Fragmin is also prescribed to patients with cancer for long-term (six months) prevention of blood clots.
Fragmin works by blocking proteins that cause blood clotting and so prevents blood clots from forming or growing. Blood clots, if they detach, can cause serious and potentially life-threatening conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lung), and stroke.
Fragmin is often administered by a healthcare professional in a hospital, but patients will self-inject for several days after being sent home from the hospital. Cancer patients will self-inject for six months.
The most commonly experienced side effects of Fragmin are injection site reactions such as redness, pain, itching, and a small lump. These effects typically go away after a day or two. Fragmin prevents blood clotting, so bleeding problems are commonly experienced and are the cause of many of the side effects of Fragmin, such as bruising, bleeding, dark urine, bloody stools, coughing up blood, and pale skin. Mental and mood changes are also related to bleeding and include confusion and trouble concentrating. Allergic reactions to Fragmin are rare.
