What is Celexa?

Celexa is an antidepressant that belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This medication is not approved for use by patients who are younger than 18 years old.

Do not use Celexa if you are allergic to Celexa or any of its inactive ingredients. Before you use Celexa, tell your doctor if you have other medical conditions such as a history of a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, liver or kidney disease, narrow-angle glaucoma, seizures or epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts or actions.

All antidepressants, including Celexa, have a black box warning, which is the strongest warning required by the FDA. Antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior, more so in children, teenagers, and young adults. However, all people—of any age—who take antidepressants must be closely monitored for changes in behavior and suicidal thoughts or actions.

If you are currently taking pimozide, you should not take Celexa as the combination of drugs can cause problems with your heart's rhythm. If you have used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the past 14 days or if you have received a methylene blue injection, you should not use Celexa. You should also avoid consuming alcohol while using Celexa.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you are using including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Ask your doctor if he or she has any concerns before using a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen while using Celexa. Celexa interacts with a number of medications, so it is best to check with your doctor to be sure the combination of medications you take is safe.

Only use Celexa how it was prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not use larger or smaller amounts of Celexa than your doctor recommends. Do not suddenly stop taking Celexa as you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. You should get medical advice from your doctor on how to safely stop using this antidepressant.

What are the side effects of Celexa?

Common side effects of Celexa include drowsiness/sleepiness, headache, numbness, dry mouth, increased sweating, trouble sleeping, changes in weight, increased appetite, diarrhea, sexual problems, and gas. If you have blurred vision, lightheadedness, headache with chest pain and severe dizziness, and fast heartbeat, you should see your doctor right away.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, throat, or tongue, you should get immediate medical attention. This is not a complete list of the possible side effects of Celexa, as other adverse effects may occur. For additional information on serious side effects and the risks associated with using Celexa, you can talk to your doctor.
