Is there a generic of Lexapro?

Lexapro is a brand-name prescription drug. The generic version is available as escitalopram.

What is Lexapro?

Lexapro is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat anxiety and depression. It belongs to a group of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It increases the availability of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. Thus, it helps balance serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is believed to be an important chemical for regulating mood.

Lexapro may improve energy levels, decrease nervousness, and promote feelings of well-being. It may take a week or two to start feeling better, and up to about six weeks to experience maximum benefits. Keep your doctor informed about your condition throughout the use of this medication. If your condition worsens or does not improve, contact your doctor immediately.

What doses of Lexapro are available?

Generic Lexapro comes in both tablet (available in 5, 10, and 20 milligrams) and liquid form and should only be used as directed by your doctor. It is usually taken once daily. However, your dosage will usually be decided by your doctor based on your age, your medical condition, other medications you are using, and your response to the treatment. Ensure that you tell your doctor about all other medications you are currently using before you start taking Lexapro.

What are the side effects of Lexapro?

Common side effects of Lexapro use may include headache, nausea, trouble sleeping (insomnia), increased sweating, fatigue, dry mouth, constipation or diarrhea, and dizziness. Lexapro may also cause decreased libido and changes in sexual performance. If you experience these symptoms and they persist or worsen, speak with your doctor.

Serious allergic reactions are rare. If you have symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience more serious side effects such as fainting, fast heartbeat, seizures, vision changes, or bloody stool.

All antidepressants, including Lexapro, have a black box warning, which is the most serious warning required by the FDA. People who take antidepressants should be closely monitored for suicidal thoughts and behaviors as well as any changes in mood or behavior.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult with a healthcare professional for medical advice before using this medication to ensure that you're aware of all of the relevant risks and benefits.

When is the best time to take Lexapro?

The prescribing information recommends that Lexapro should be taken at the same time each day, with or without food. You can pick a time that works best for you, and then take Lexapro at the same time every day.

Store Lexapro at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep this medication and all others out of reach and sight of children and pets. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

If you miss a dose of Lexapro, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Note that it may take up to two weeks until your symptoms start to improve—and it may take up to about six weeks to feel the full benefit of this medicine. Keep in communication with your healthcare provider regarding how you are feeling and if you have any side effects. Do not stop taking Lexapro suddenly because it could cause withdrawal symptoms. If you need to stop taking Lexapro, your healthcare professional will provide you with a tapering schedule to stop taking it slowly and safely.
