What is the brand name of Acetazolamide?

Acetazolamide is a generic prescription medication. The brand-name version of this drug is Diamox.

What is Acetazolamide?

Acetazolamide is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to reduce and prevent the symptoms of altitude sickness. It works by affecting chemicals in the body to quicken the time it takes to become accustomed to higher altitudes. Acetazolamide may also be used to treat a type of eye problem known as open-angle glaucoma. It does this by decreasing the amount of fluid that can build up in your eye and lowering intraocular pressure.

Acetazolamide comes in the form of oral capsules, and the dosage varies by indication. These capsules should be swallowed whole. Do not break, open, or chew them as this may cause fluctuations in how the drug is released in your body. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.

Take this medication regularly as prescribed to get the most benefit. You can try using it at the same time(s) every day so as to easily remember when to take it. This medication may cause you to urinate, so taking your last dose of the day early in the evening will help to prevent you from getting up in the middle of the night. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about the schedule of your doses.

What are the side effects of Acetazolamide?

Acetazolamide may cause unwanted side effects such as nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, drowsiness, loss of appetite, increased urination, blurred vision, or ringing in the ears/hearing changes. These effects may especially occur when you first start using this drug and typically go away as your body becomes accustomed to the medication. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects.

Acetazolamide may reduce the levels of potassium in your blood. Your doctor may recommend that you add potassium-rich foods to your diet such as bananas or orange juice. Your doctor may also recommend a potassium supplement to help you normalize your potassium levels while you are using this drug.

Allergic reactions to Acetazolamide are rare. If you experience hives, a rash, blisters, flulike symptoms, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Before taking Acetazolamide, tell your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have and all of the medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements.

Ask your doctor or healthcare professional for full drug information, drug interactions, and medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Acetazolamide as this is not a complete list of possible side effects.
