Viberzi is available as a brand-name drug only. A generic version of Viberzi is not yet available.
Viberzi is an FDA-approved prescription medicine in the form of oral tablets. It is approved to treat an abdominal disorder called irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). Viberzi is usually taken twice daily (with food) to keep these symptoms under control.
Viberzi contains eluxadoline, a mu-opioid receptor agonist. It works by decreasing bowel activity.
People without a gallbladder should not take Viberzi. Individuals with a pancreas disorder, severe liver problems, or alcohol use disorder also should not take Viberzi.
Viberzi can interact with medicines that cause constipation, anticholinergic medicines (medicines that block the neurotransmitter chemical acetylcholine), and opioid pain medicines. Viberzi can also interact with a drug called cyclosporine and certain antiretroviral drugs, such as ritonavir, lopinavir, and atazanavir. Consult your healthcare provider about other possible drug interactions and tell them if you are taking any of these medicines before using Viberzi.
Common side effects of using Viberzi include constipation, nausea, vomiting, bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and dizziness.
Let your healthcare provider know if you are allergic to eluxadoline, the active ingredient in Viberzi.
Signs of a possible allergic reaction may include skin rash, itching, or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and breathing problems. Get emergency medical help if this occurs.
Viberzi can also cause constipation or inflammation of the pancreas, which could be severe and lead to hospitalization. Call your healthcare provider immediately if you have severe or persistent constipation or severe upper stomach pain that spreads to the back.
Before using Viberzi, seek medical advice and ask about all possible side effects.
The prescribing information does not put a limit of time on how long you can take Viberzi. The manufacturer website notes that you should take Viberzi twice daily for as long as your healthcare provider recommends—also noting that symptoms may return if you stop taking it as prescribed.
If you are interested in an alternative for Viberzi, consult your healthcare provider, who can determine the best drug based on individual factors like your symptoms and medical history. Some examples of Viberzi alternatives include Xifaxan (rifaximin) and Lomotil (diphenoxylate/atropine).
