Valcyte can be used in children who are at least 4 months old to prevent CMV infection after a kidney transplant. This drug can also be used in children who are at least 1 month old to prevent CMV disease after a heart transplant.
Valcyte is an antiviral drug that works by slowing the growth of the CMV virus and helping to prevent the spread of infection to other parts of the body. Valcyte does not CMV; it only treats symptoms and assists with controlling the virus.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or a blood cell disorder (such as anemia or low levels of platelets in your blood). You should also tell your doctor if you are receiving radiation treatment or undergoing hemodialysis before taking Valcyte.
