Trospium Chloride is a generic prescription drug used to reduce bladder activity. Trospium Chloride is the active ingredient in the brand-name prescription drug, Sanctura. Generic Trospium Chloride is manufactured by generic drug manufacturers, including Apotex, Heritage, and Paddock, among others.
Trospium Chloride is a generic prescription drug that treats an overactive bladder by relaxing bladder muscles. Overactive bladder is a condition involving frequent, urgent, and sometimes involuntary urination. In patients with overactive bladder, the bladder muscles contract or tighten, sometimes suddenly, when they shouldn't.
Trospium Chloride belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics, which block a chemical, called acetylcholine, that passes nerve signals to the muscles, including muscles in the bladder. When Trospium Chloride blocks acetylcholine from these junctions between nerves and muscles, the effect is to relax and weaken the bladder muscles, making them less likely to contract or spasm. The reduced pressure in the bladder decreases the persistent and unwelcome need to urinate that characterizes overactive bladder.
Trospium Chloride is taken as a tablet twice a day. Trospium Chloride is also available in the extended-release format.
Trospium Chloride has a lower incidence of side effects than similar drugs (anticholinergic agents). Although not a complete list, common side effects of Trospium Chloride include stomach upset, gas, constipation, dry mouth, dry throat, dry eyes, blurred vision, headache, fast heartbeat, drowsiness, and dizziness. Mental and mood changes are very rare but include confusion and hallucinations. Allergic reactions to Trospium Chloride are rare but include rashes, hives, swelling, and trouble breathing. Discontinue use of Trospium Chloride if you experience an allergic reaction, severe abdominal pain, or chest pain.
