Tramadol Hcl is a generic prescription medication made by several pharmaceutical manufacturers. Ultram is the brand-name version of this drug.
Tramadol Hcl is an FDA-approved generic prescription medication used to help relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. This medication is similar to narcotic analgesics and works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.
Read and follow the instructions provided in the medication guide before taking this medication. If you have any questions or concerns about this medication then talk to your doctor or pharmacist for additional information.
Tramadol Hcl is available in the form of an oral tablet and is usually taken every four to six hours as needed. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. You may take this medication with or without food. If you experience nausea when taking Tramadol Hcl, then take it with food to lessen this effect.
Pain medications such as Tramadol Hcl work best if they are used at the first signs of pain. If you wait until the pain has worsened, then this medication may not work as well. If you experience ongoing, chronic pain, then your doctor or pain management specialist may prescribe an additional long-acting opioid medication. Suddenly stopping this medication may cause withdrawal, especially if you have used this drug for a long time or in high doses. To prevent withdrawal, your doctor will lower your dose slowly over a period of time.
Tramadol Hcl generally starts relieving pain in about an hour, with a peak effect at the two to three-hour mark.
Tramadol Hcl may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, or headaches. These effects are usually temporary and go away as your body becomes accustomed to treatment. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen.
Tramadol Hcl may increase serotonin levels and cause a rare but serious condition known as serotonin syndrome. The risk of this condition increases if you are also taking other medicines that increase your serotonin levels, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or tricyclic antidepressants. Be sure to tell your doctor about all other medications you are using before you start taking Tramadol Hcl. This includes prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. While taking Tramadol Hcl, do not start any new medications unless your healthcare professional tells you that it is safe to do so. Seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of serotonin syndrome such as fast heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, severe dizziness, severe vomiting and nausea, and unusual restlessness.
Serious allergic reactions are rare. Seek emergency medical attention if you have symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Serious, life-threatening skin reactions can occur. These symptoms also require emergency medical attention and may include fever, burning eyes, sore throat, skin pain, red or purple rash, or blistering or peeling skin.
Other, serious side effects can occur. Ask your physician or healthcare provider for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Tramadol Hcl as this is not a complete list of side effects.
