What is Sevelamer Carbonate?

Sevelamer Carbonate is a generic prescription drug that prevents phosphorus (phosphate) from being absorbed into the body through the intestines. Sevelamer Carbonate is prescribed to patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis who are at high risk of dangerous levels of phosphate in the blood.

Excess phosphate from the diet is normally removed by healthy kidneys. Without properly functioning kidneys, the body is unable to get rid of excess phosphate, which can lead to high levels of phosphate in the blood. High levels of phosphate in the blood can cause bone and muscle problems. Over time, high phosphate levels can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Sevelamer Carbonate is taken with meals as a tablet or oral suspension. Classified as a phosphate binder, Sevelamer Carbonate attaches itself, or bonds, to phosphate molecules in the food you eat. Because Sevelamer Carbonate is not absorbed by the body, both Sevelamer Carbonate and the bonded phosphate pass through and out the digestive tract.

What are the side effects of Sevelamer Carbonate?

The most common side effects of Sevelamer Carbonate are gastrointestinal in nature. These side effects include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and upset stomach. Serious side effects may include trouble swallowing, gastrointestinal ulcers, inflammation of the colon (colitis), necrosis, and perforation. The use of Sevelamer Carbonate may decrease levels of vitamins D, E, and K, as well as folic acid. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while using Sevelamer Carbonate.

Allergic reactions are rare. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face or throat. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction while taking Sevelamer Carbonate.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. As always, your best source for information about side effects is your prescribing physician.

Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
