Auryxia is an FDA-approved prescription drug that is used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults with chronic kidney disease who are not on dialysis. Auryxia (ferric citrate) is an iron supplement and phosphate binder that is used to control phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. It works by binding to phosphate and removing it from the body Auryxia is for adults only and has not been approved for use in children. You should follow the prescribing information by the doctor or the directions on the prescription label. Your doctor will order blood work while on treatment with Auryxia. Your doctor may also give you special dietary instructions.
Swallow this medication whole. Do not chew or crush Auryxia. Take Auryxia with meals as directed. Do not miss doses or double dose. Auryxia should not be taken longer than prescribed by your doctor. Auryxia should be stored at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and sunlight. Keep out of the reach of children. An accidental overdose can be fatal in children.
You should let your doctor know what medications you are taking while on treatment with Auryxia. Interactions may occur with certain medications. Avoid taking other medicines at the same time as Auryxia. Do not take any vitamins or supplements that contain iron while taking Auryxia, unless your doctor tells you to do so.
The most common side effects of Auryxia are nausea, constipation or diarrhea, fecal discoloration, and stomach pain.
Severe allergic reactions are rare but may include skin rash, itching, hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the lips, face, and tongue. If these symptoms occur, get emergency medical attention right away.
If you experience seizures, stomach pain, blue lips, nails or palms, difficulty swallowing, vomiting or drowsiness, contact your doctor immediately as these symptoms may be life-threatening.
Call your doctor right away if you have severe stomach problems including pain, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you have symptoms of high potassium, including nausea, weakness, tingling, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, or loss of movement, call your doctor right away.
