Santyl is a brand-name drug. Collagenase topical is the generic name of Santyl. Currently, there is not a generic equivalent to Santyl available in the U.S. market.
Santyl is a prescription drug that is used to remove dead tissue from wounds such as severe burns and ulcers. When a wound starts to heal, nonliving tissue can appear on the affected area. As a result, non-living tissue can cause bacteria to grow around the area which can cause the wound to be contaminated.
Collagenase is the active ingredient found in Santyl that aids in the process of breaking down peptide bonds found in collagen. Collagen is a protein that your body needs to maintain connective tissues. When you receive a second or third-degree burn, you may need to increase the amount of collagen in your body to help your wound heal properly.
Santyl is available as a topical ointment. Before using Santyl, you should talk to your healthcare provider to see if Santyl is right for you. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should inform your healthcare professional. You should ask your healthcare provider for medical advice if Santyl does not help with your recovery process.
Some, but not all, side effects of using Santyl include feeling a painful or burning sensation around the affected area, temporary redness, and irritation. A serious side effect of removing dead skin tissue is a condition called sepsis. Sepsis is an infection that has spread to your blood and can cause you to experience fever or chills, hyperventilation, and weakness.
If you experience any of these side effects along with other abnormal bodily changes, you should contact your healthcare provider. You can also file a report of your side effects to the FDA by calling 1-800-FDA-1088.
