What is Sandostatin?

Sandostatin is a brand-name prescription drug prescribed to relieve watery diarrhea and flushing in patients with cancerous tumors, such as carcinoid tumors and vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors. Sandostatin is also used to treat a rare condition, acromegaly, in which the pituitary gland secretes too much growth hormone in adults, resulting in swelling of the face, hands, and feet, among other symptoms.

Carcinoid tumors and vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors are neuroendocrine tumors that first develop in the endocrine or nervous system. Carcinoid tumors typically appear in the intestines and vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors are usually found in the pancreas. Both types of tumors can cause an overproduction of hormones and substances, which leads to diarrhea and facial flushing.

Acromegaly is a condition characterized by the pituitary gland secreting too much growth hormone. This condition can cause bones and body tissues to enlarge. It is usually diagnosed in adults, and it can cause symptoms that include enlarged or swollen hands or feet, difficulty sleeping, and changes in facial features, such as an enlarged jaw. Sandostatin is often prescribed when other treatments have failed, such as surgical removal of the pituitary gland, radiation treatment, or other drugs.
