What is Salsalate?
Salsalate is a generic prescription drug similar to aspirin that is used to relieve pain and swelling due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other rheumatic disorders, such as rheumatism of the tendons, muscles, ligaments, bones, and spine.
Salsalate belongs to a class of medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that work by blocking substances in the body that cause inflammation (swelling), pain, and fever. Salsalate is as effective as aspirin at reducing swelling, but does not thin the blood as much as aspirin does. Substituting Salsalate for aspirin means lowering the risk for bleeding, bruising, and gastrointestinal problems that are often caused by aspirin.
Salsalate is taken as a tablet two or three times a day in immediate-release format. Salsalate is not available in an extended-release format.
What are the side effects of Salsalate?
Side effects of Salsalate include upset stomach, heartburn, dizziness, hearing problems, ringing in the ears, fast heartbeat, and dark urine.
