Remeron is manufactured by Merck. The generic version of Remeron is mirtazapine.
Remeron is part of a group of antidepressants called tetracyclic antidepressants, and it is approved to treat depression, or major depressive disorder, in adults. It is not fully understood exactly how Remeron works, but it is believed to help treat depression by restoring the balance of certain natural chemicals, norepinephrine, and serotonin, in the brain. It is typically prescribed to be taken once daily in the evening.
Remeron should not be used in combination with a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor or if you have used an MAO inhibitor within the past 14 days since dangerous drug interactions could occur. Examples of these medications include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
Before using Remeron, tell your doctor if you have a history of liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, bipolar disorder, depression, suicidal thoughts, seizures, low blood pressure, low sodium levels, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, or heart problems. This medication is only available with a prescription and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider.
The most common side effects of Remeron are drowsiness, dizziness, increased appetite, and weight gain. Other possible side effects may include strange dreams, vision changes, dry mouth, and constipation.
Serious side effects of Remeron include low white blood cell counts, angle-closure glaucoma, heart rhythm problems, manic episodes, seizures, and liver problems.
Taking Remeron with certain other medications, such as other antidepressants, may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition. Serotonin syndrome is characterized by signs and symptoms like agitation, confusion, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, or coma. Seek medical attention if you experience any of these side effects.
Abruptly stopping the use of Remeron could lead to withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety, irritability, headache, dizziness, and trouble sleeping. When discontinuing this medication, a tapering schedule may be needed to slowly decrease the dose of the drug and prevent withdrawal. Consult your healthcare provider before discontinuing this medication.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional for any additional information and medical advice regarding other potential side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions associated with Remeron.
