About Ofev

Ofev is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive and incurable lung condition in which healthy lung tissue is replaced by scarred tissue due to a cycle of damage and healing of lung tissue. As the disease progresses, breathing and getting enough oxygen to the body's tissues becomes more difficult. The active ingredient in Ofev, nintedanib, slows the progress of the disease by blocking a protein critical to the body's ability to produce scar tissue. the Ofev cost is normally $16,388.68 at full price. A SingleCare Ofev coupon reduces that price to $12,859.09. Because Ofev has only until recently been a trial drug, patients can still only fill their prescription at a specialty pharmacy approved by Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer, and sent by overnight courier to the patient.

What is Ofev?

Ofev is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, or IPF, and scleroderma interstitial lung disease, or SSc-ILD. Both are progressive and incurable lung conditions in which healthy lung tissue is replaced by scarred tissue due to a cycle of damage and healing of lung tissue.

While SSc-ILD is caused by the immune system attacking healthy lung tissue, the cause of IPF is unknown. Both involve a cycle of lesions and repair to the lungs. Scar tissue begins forming along the edges of the lung and progressively works its way to the center of the lung. Breathing becomes more difficult and patients will usually die of respiratory failure. On average, patients with IPF can expect to live 2.5 to 3.5 years after diagnosis. Like all autoimmune diseases, however, SSc-ILD varies in its progress, so patients could live for ten years or longer after diagnosis. SSc-ILD is usually treated by immune-suppressing drugs.

Scar tissue is made of collagen, which is laid down by cells called fibroblasts. In response to tissue damage, fibroblasts migrate to the area, divide rapidly, and make the substances that create scar tissue. The active ingredient in Ofev, nintedanib, blocks a family of proteins called tyrosine kinases that “signal” the cell to divide. This, in turn, blocks fibroblasts from proliferating. While it does not stop the formation of scar tissue, it does reduce it.

Ofev is taken as a capsule twice daily with food twelve hours apart.
