What is Esbriet?
Esbriet is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or IPF. This is a progressive and incurable lung condition in which healthy lung tissue is damaged and then replaced by scar tissue during healing. Scarring begins at the edges of the lungs and progresses inward towards the center. On average, patients will succumb to respiratory failure 2.5 to 3.5 years after the initial diagnosis.
The disease cannot be stopped, but it can be slowed. Esbriet slows down the progress of the disease by blocking the body's ability to form scar tissue. Scar tissue is made of collagen fibers, which are produced by cells called fibroblasts. When a part of the lung is damaged, fibroblasts migrate to the area, divide rapidly, and make the collagen fibers that create scar tissue. The active ingredient in Esbriet, pirfenidone, prevents fibroblasts from dividing and blocks their ability to make collagen fibers.
Esbriet is taken as a capsule with food three times a day.
What are the side effects of Esbriet?
Common side effects of Esbriet include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, decreased appetite, weight loss, headache, dizziness, problems sleeping, joint pain, abdominal pain, feeling tired, and cold symptoms. Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash, and talk to your doctor immediately.
