What is Nucynta?

Nucynta is a narcotic (opioid) analgesic tablet used to relieve severe pain. It works by altering your body’s perception of pain and response to pain. It may be prescribed to individuals with severe pain that won’t respond to a milder pain reliever.

What doses of Nucynta are available?

Nucynta tablets are available in strengths of 50 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg. It’s also available in an extended-release form called Nucynta ER. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions for dosage and use of this medication.

What are the side effects of Nucynta?

Nucynta’s most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, headache, constipation, dizziness, sleepiness, and dry mouth.

Serious side effects may occur. Possible serious side effects include seizures, hallucinations, severe GI problems, and others. Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of these adverse reactions. Also, if you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, like hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.

As a controlled substance, this pain medication also has the potential to become habit-forming.

This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for additional information or questions about side effects.

Who should not take Nucynta?

Before taking Nucynta, tell your doctor about any allergies to medication, as well as your family history and medical history. • People with acute or severe asthma

  • People with severe respiratory depression, in a coma, in circulatory shock, or with impaired consciousness

What is the shelf life of Nucynta?

The shelf life of Nucynta will vary, so ask your pharmacist when it expires and how to dispose of it at the nearest drug take-back location. Because Nucynta has the potential for abuse and dependence, you should store it where no one can get to it and keep track of your pills so you know if any are missing. Even taking one pill, especially by a child, can cause death.

What can I take instead of Nucynta?

The best alternative for Nucynta depends on various individual factors like the severity of your pain, other medications you take, potential side effects, and more. Your doctor will consider what kind of pain control you need and prescribe the appropriate medication(s). This could be a different opioid pain medicine or something less strong, like a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as Mobic (meloxicam) or Celebrex (celecoxib). Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice.
