Narcan nasal spray is manufactured by Adapt Pharma, Inc. The active ingredient of Narcan is naloxone hydrochloride. There isn't currently a generic alternative of the nasal spray available but there are other generic forms of naloxone. The cost of naloxone in other forms could differ from brand-name Narcan nasal spray.
Narcan is an FDA-approved nasal spray used to treat an overdose of opioids, or narcotics, in emergency situations. Opioids include prescription opioids such as pain relievers or recreational drugs like heroin and synthetic opioids, like fentanyl. The National Institute on Drug Abuse considers opioid addiction and misuse to have caused a public health crisis.
An opioid emergency can occur when an opioid is taken at normal doses, or when it is taken at higher doses than prescribed, especially when taken with other medications that cause sedation. Signs of overdosing on opioids include confusion, unusual sleepiness, unusual difficulty waking up, loss of consciousness, and breathing problems such as slowed breathing.
Narcan belongs to a class of drugs called opioid antagonists. It contains naloxone hydrochloride, which works by temporarily blocking or reversing the effects of opioids in the brain.
Since most cases of opioid overdose happen at home, Narcan was designed for first responders and law enforcement (EMTs, police officers, paramedics, firefighters), as well as caregivers, family members, and loved ones who may not have medical training.
Narcan should be given immediately after signs of an opioid overdose arise. It should not be used as a substitute for emergency medical help. You will need to get emergency medical attention (call 911 right away, even if the person wakes up), as symptoms may return. In some cases, a repeat dose of naloxone may be necessary.
A Statewide Naloxone Standing Order allows residents of the United States to purchase naloxone kits from pharmacists to enhance access to life-saving medication in homes where opioids are present. In 2018-2019, the CDC reported nearly 70,000 overdose deaths.
If you or a loved one is seeking help for substance abuse, you can call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357.
Side effects of Narcan include sudden opioid withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms include body aches, diarrhea, increased heart rate, fever, runny nose, sneezing, stomach cramping, and changes in blood pressure.
You should contact your doctor immediately if you or the patient you’re treating experience one or more of these side effects. These are not all the possible side effects of Narcan. Contact your doctor before using Narcan and ask about these and other possible side effects.
