Mydriacyl is a brand-name prescription drug with tropicamide, a drug that is also available as a generic. However, Mydriacyl and tropicamide and not sold to consumers through pharmacies, but sold directly to clinics, hospitals, and vision centers through specialty pharmacies. They will choose the brand and manufacturer that best suits their needs and then bill the patient for individual use of the medication during diagnostic procedures.
Mydriacyl is a brand-name prescription eye drops medication used to dilate pupils before a diagnostic eye examination.
The active ingredient in Mydriacyl, tropicamide, belongs to a family of drugs called muscarinic anticholenergics. These drugs block a chemical, acetylcholine, in the involuntary nervous system that causes muscles to contract. The involuntary nervous system includes the muscles in the iris that cause the pupils to contract. Mydriacyl relaxes those muscles and the pupil gets wider. Tropicamide also blocks the ability of the lens to focus, so blurred vision is a very common side effect.
Mydriacyl is not purchased in pharmacies but administered by a healthcare provider, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist in a clinical setting. Mydriacyl is administered as one or two drops in the conjunctival sac (inside of the bottom eyelid) of the eye being examined. Pupil dilation will occur in 5 minutes to an hour. Effects usually wear off in 6 to 8 hours but may last as long as 24 hours.
The most common physical side effects of Mydriacyl are site reactions, such as stinging or burning on the surface of the eye, or direct effects of dilated pupils such as blurred vision, inability to focus, and sensitivity to light. Other side effects include, but are not limited to, increased eye pressure, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, temporary paleness, and rapid heartbeat. Mental and mood changes include behavior changes and psychotic reactions, particularly in children.
Allergic reactions are rare and include swelling of the eyelid, itching, redness, tears, and a rash around the eye.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or optometrist.
