Atropine Sulfate is a generic prescription drug. Isopto is the brand-name version.
Atropine Sulfate is a generic prescription drug used as an ophthalmic solution to dilate pupils before an eye exam or to treat patients with mild to moderate amblyopia (lazy eye). As an injection, Atropine Sulfate is used as an emergency treatment for nerve agent or insecticide poisoning.
Atropine Sulfate belongs to a class of drugs called muscarinic anticholenergics that specifically block the nerves that control pupil dilation, the heart, and intestines. When used as eye drops, Atropine Sulfate relaxes the iris and causes the pupils to dilate. This blurs the vision, so Atropine Sulfate is often prescribed to be used to treat amblyopia, a condition in which the brain favors one eye, leading the other eye to be unused. Atropine Sulfate is regularly administered into the “good” eye to blur its vision, which trains the brain to use the other eye.
Finally, Atropine Sulfate is administered as an emergency treatment to exposure to muscarinic nerve agents or insecticides, chemicals that overexcite the nerves that control the heart and cause the heart to beat rapidly, often leading to death. Atropine Sulfate blocks these nerves and helps to immediately slow down the heart.
To dilate pupils or as an emergency injection, Atropine Sulfate is not purchased in pharmacies but administered by a healthcare provider. As a treatment for amblyopia, Atropine Sulfate is administered by the patient or a parent as one eye drop in the lower eyelid once per day. The eyelid should be immediately closed and pressed with a finger to prevent Atropine Sulfate from spilling out and potentially being swallowed.
The most common physical side effects of Atropine Sulfate eye drops are site reactions, such as stinging, pain, or burning on the eye, or direct effects of dilated pupils such as blurred vision, inability to focus, or sensitivity to light. Other side effects include but are not limited to pale skin, slow heart rate, dry mouth, dry throat, dry skin, eyelid swelling, and central nervous system problems, especially if accidentally swallowed. Mental and mood changes include restlessness and irritability.
Atropine Sulfate injections commonly produce side effects including nausea, vomiting, headache, slow heart rate, dry mouth, constipation, irregular heart rate, flushing, and urinary problems. Mental and mood changes are common and will include confusion, agitation, hallucinations, and possibly delirium. In a large enough dose, Atropine Sulfate will cause paralysis and death.
Allergic reactions to Atropine Sulfate eye drops occasionally happen and include swelling of the eyelid, itching, redness, tears, and a rash around the eye. Reactions to the injection will include a skin rash that may lead to loss of hair.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
