What is the brand name of Miglitol?

Miglitol is a generic drug manufactured by Bayer. The brand name version of Miglitol is Glyset.

What is Miglitol?

Miglitol is a member of the alpha-glucosidase inhibitors drug class and is commonly used for Type 2 diabetes. Alpha-glucosidase is one of the enzymes responsible for breaking down carbohydrates to smaller sugar particles like glucose, in order for the carbohydrates to be absorbed. Drugs in the alpha-glucosidase inhibitors work by competitive and reversible inhibition of these intestinal enzymes. They slow the digestion of carbohydrates and delay glucose absorption. This results in a smaller and slower rise in blood glucose levels following meals, and effectively throughout the day.

Miglitol may not be safe for you if you have inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's), a blockage in your intestines, a chronic intestinal disorder that affects digestion, or a stomach disorder that causes excess gas. It is important to note that miglitol should not be used if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis. If you are 18 years or older, Miglitol should not be used. Talk to your healthcare provider about other age-appropriate medications.

Miglitol is not expected to harm an unborn baby, however, you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this prescription drug. Miglitol can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby so you should not breast-feed while using this drug.

What are the side effects of Miglitol?

Possible side effects of Miglitol can include stomach discomfort, diarrhea, gas, or mild rash. Call your healthcare provider immediately if you have severe diarrhea or constipation, bloody or tarry stools, rectal bleeding, or diarrhea that contains blood or mucus.

Other side effects can occur when using Miglitol. Consult with your doctor before taking Miglitol to determine if it is right for you. You can also report additional side effects to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
