What is the brand name of Acarbose?

Acarbose is a generic prescription drug that is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with Type 2 diabetes. Acarbose is not approved for use in children. Acarbose is also the active ingredient in Precose, the brand-name drug manufactured by Bayer. Search the SingleCare website or app for Precose to learn more.

What is Acarbose?

Acarbose is a generic prescription drug used to control blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes, a condition in which sugar (glucose) in the bloodstream is too high. Acarbose prevents blood sugar levels from rising dramatically after a meal by slowing down the digestive process.

Acarbose is usually taken three times a day with the first bite of each main meal. The dosage prescribed will be based on effectiveness and your tolerance for the medication. Take Acarbose as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose unless your doctor instructs you to do so. Your doctor may prescribe Acarbose alone or in combination with other diabetes medications or insulin.

As with all Type 2 diabetes medications, Acarbose is intended to supplement exercise and dietary changes, which are the most effective way to control blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Before taking Acarbose, tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have. Acarbose is not safe to take if you have inflammatory bowel disease, an ulcer or blockage in the intestines, or cirrhosis. Acarbose is not a treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis.

Always wear a diabetic medical alert that notifies responders in case of emergency. Talk to your doctor about monitoring your blood sugar and what to do if your blood sugar gets too low. Ask your doctor if you should carry glucagon, which is an emergency treatment for severely low blood sugar.

What are the side effects of Acarbose?

Because Acarbose slows down the digestive process, the most common side effects of Acarbose are gastrointestinal: stomach pain, gas, and diarrhea.

Allergic reactions to Acarbose are rare. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling around the face and mouth, get emergency medical help right away.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
