What is Midol Complete?
Midol Complete is a brand-name medication that relieves multiple symptoms of menstruation. The active ingredients in Midol Complete – acetaminophen, caffeine, and pyrilamine – help relieve menstrual cramps, headache, bloating, muscle aches, backache, and fatigue.
Acetaminophen is a pain reliever (analgesic) that does not relieve swelling as aspirin, ibuprofen, or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) do. It is intended to reduce the discomfort of cramps, headache, backache, and muscle aches. Caffeine is s stimulant that helps to relieve fatigue and tiredness. Pyrilamine is an antihistamine that is intended to relieve bloating, cramps, and backache.
Midol Complete is taken as a caplet. Two are taken every 6 hours for a maximum of 6 caplets a day.
What are the side effects of Midol Complete?
In general, side effects will be uncommon and minimal. The most common side effects of Midol Complete are nausea, stomach upset, loss of appetite, diarrhea, itching, rash, headache, drowsiness, thickened lung secretions, and dark urine. Caffeine is a stimulant, so mental and mood changes are possible, including nervousness and agitation. Pyrilamine can cause confusion, dizziness, and drowsiness.
In some women, caffeine seems to worsen pre-menstrual and menstrual symptoms including cramping. In addition, caffeine consumption has also been shown to shorten periods. For women who are sensitive to caffeine during menstruation, other “complete” menstrual products without caffeine are available, such as Pamprin Multi-Symptom.
Pyrilamine passes into breast milk and may be hazardous to nursing infants. Women who are nursing should not take Midol Complete or any other medication with pyrilamine.
Acetaminophen may cause severe allergic reactions on the skin that may require hospitalization. Look for signs of a skin reaction such as rash, reddening, blisters, peeling, or sore throat. Get immediate medical attention if you believe you are having an allergic reaction to any Midol Complete product.
Follow the dosing or your doctor's instructions carefully and do not exceed the recommended dose. Acetaminophen is toxic to the liver. Acetaminophen overdose is the most common form of poisoning in the United States and could be fatal.
