One cause of depression is a breakdown of nerve signals in the areas of the brain that control mood. The active ingredient in Marplan, isocarboxazid, works by rebalancing certain chemicals that pass signals in the brain.
Isocarboxazid is a “monoamine oxidase inhibitor,” that is, it blocks a protein, monoamine oxidase, which sometimes removes critical nerve signaling chemicals too quickly. With improved nerve communication, the brain is better able to regulate mood.
Marplan normally takes up to six weeks to show improvements in mood.
