Peppermint oil is widely used as an effective and safe over-the-counter remedy for irritable bowel syndrome. While the exact mechanism is not perfectly understood, it is believed that one substance in the oil, menthol, causes the muscles in the small intestines to relax and reduces the strength of their contractions. This significantly reduces the abdominal pain that characterizes irritable bowel syndrome and may relieve other symptoms as well
Ibgard is formulated to contain peppermint oil in a hydrogel that is only released when it gets to the small intestine. The hydrogel then slowly releases the peppermint oil into the intestinal tissues.
Two capsules of Ibgard are taken with water twice per day 90 minutes before a meal to prevent irritable bowel syndrome. To treat active irritable bowel syndrome, two capsules are taken with water three to five times a day for four weeks.
