Grastek is a brand-name prescription drug for which there is not a generic alternative.
Grastek is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat certain types of allergies, caused by grass pollens, that may occur seasonally or even all year round. It is made from an extract of certain plants and grass pollen that cause allergies. Your doctor will usually perform lab tests to first learn what you are allergic to.
Grastek works by making your body less sensitive to the pollen that causes your allergies. It usually does not work right away to relieve allergy symptoms, so it is recommended that this medication is started at least 12 weeks before symptoms are expected to occur.
Use this medication consistently in order to ensure you experience maximum benefit. If you're using this medication over an extended period of time and do not experience your symptoms improving, then you should contact your doctor right away.
Before taking Grastek, tell your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have, and any medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Grastek has a black box warning, which is the strongest warning required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The warning states:
Grastek can cause life-threatening allergic reactions (see more on this below). Grastek should not be used by patients with certain medical conditions that may lower their chance of surviving a serious reaction.
Patients with asthma that is severe, unstable, or not controlled, should not take Grastek. Patients who may be unresponsive to epinephrine or emergency inhalers (such as patients who take beta blockers) should not take Grastek.
The first dose of Grastek is given in the doctor’s office, and then the patient is observed for at least 30 minutes.
Patients who take Grastek should also have a prescription for auto-injectable epinephrine (EpiPen), and should be trained on how to use it.
The most common side effects of Grastek are throat irritation, swelling under the tongue, and itching of the mouth, lips, or tongue.
Grastek can cause severe allergic reactions, which can be life-threatening. Seek emergency medical attention if you have any of the following symptoms: tightness or swelling of the throat, dizziness or fainting, stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhea, a heartbeat that is fast or weak, flushing or itching, or trouble breathing/wheezing.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
