Glyburide Micronized is a generic prescription drug that treats high blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin, the hormone that transports sugar from the bloodstream into tissue cells, or loses sensitivity to the insulin that is present. As a result, sugar (glucose) levels in the blood rise and, over time, can lead to complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart.
Glyburide Micronized belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylureas, the most commonly prescribed class of diabetes drugs. These drugs lower blood sugar by increasing the production of insulin by the pancreas. They are typically prescribed as a second-line treatment to patients who have not responded well to other treatments.
It is “micronized,” that is, the glyburide particles have been milled down to the smallest possible size to increase the speed at which they are absorbed and used by the body.
Glyburide Micronized is taken as a tablet once or twice daily. Glyburide Micronized comes in three doses: 1.5, 3, and 6 mg. There is no fixed dosing for diabetes medications; the dose prescribed will depend on the patient's responsiveness to Glyburide Micronized treatment. The maintenance dose typically will be between 0.75 to 12 mg a day.
The most common serious side effect of Glyburide Micronized, is hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, fast heartbeat, shaking, fainting, and headache. Another serious, although rare, adverse effect of Glyburide Micronized is low blood sodium. Contact your healthcare professional for medical advice and additional drug information.
Other common side effects of Glyburide Micronized include, but are not limited to, nausea, heartburn, muscle pain, joint pain, and blurred vision. Allergic reactions to Glyburide Micronized are rare. They include rashes, itching, swelling, and trouble breathing. Allergic reactions could be severe, including life-threatening skin reactions that may require hospitalization. Seek emergency treatment if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as sore throat, fever, facial swelling, dark rashes or drug interactions.
